ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL Saturday, May 6, 1989 H11 WEATHER REPORT Albuquerque Journal 821-1111 Temperatures recorded by and 77 KOB. forecasts Storms Roll Across Southeast THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Showers and thunderstorms spread over much of the Southeast and up the Ohio Valley to the Atlantic Coast on Friday, and unseasonably cold air spilled into the central part of the nation with temperatures hitting record lows. Severe thunderstorms which battered Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley during the preceding day spread out Friday into Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas. During the morning, wind damage to trees, roofs and power lines was reported across Mississippi. Thunderstorms moving through Birmingham, also produced high wind that downed trees.

Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front entering the lower Ohio Valley spawned a tornado near Owensboro, during the afternoon which downed power lines and large trees and flipped several vehicles, the National Weather Service said. Showers and thunderstorms extended from western ALBUQUERQUE FORECAST: Mostly sunny and a little warmer. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph in the afternoon. High today in the mid-80s. Low tonight near 50.

Elsewhere, a few showers and thunderstorms developed along an upper level weather disturbance crossing the lower Missouri Valley. Afternoon temperatures were generally only in the 30s and 40s the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley, with temperatures in the 20s in northern 1 Minnesota, northwestern Wisconsin and northwestern Upper Michigan. Freeze advisories were posted overnight for Iowa, central and eastern Nebraska, northern and southwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Alamosa, dropped to a record low of 21 degrees and International Falls, tied its record for the date of just 19 degrees. Temperatures around the nation at 1 p.m.

MDT ranged from 22 degrees at Ely and International Falls, to 98 at Gila Bend, and Twentynine Palms, Calif. 201-300 very unhealthy; 301-500 hazardous. POLLEN COUNT: Friday's pollen count at the UNM Student Health Center was cedar 12, willow 6, pine 9, tumbleweed 3, mulberry 3. The count is based on the amount of pollen collected during a 24-hour period. SOLAR ENERGY: Thursday's solar radiation total was 7,810 watt-hours per square meter.

FREISNER-Katherine Freisner, age 65, died in a local nursing home early Thursday morning. She was a resident of Albuquerque and retired from the Eastman Kodak Company. Cremation has taken place. Lawrence, age 78, and a resident of Albuquerque for two years, died Thursday in a local hospital. Robert John Smith, Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, 58, passed away Tuesday at St. Francis Gardens, where he was making his home.

He was ordained to the Priest Hood March 25, 1971, at Our Lady of the Annunciation by Archbishop James Peter Davis. He was assistant Pastor at Our Lady of Fatima Parish and Holy Ghost Parish. He is survived by his mother, Pauline Belba of Springfield, Mass. Rosary will be recited Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

Westcott, age 71, of Selma, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 1989 at his home as a result of a massive stroke in July 1988. He was born August 21, 1917 at Dallas, Texas and lived there until he attended Rice Institute of Houston. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Engineering. For a time, he managed a geophysical crew until an oil field accident severly burned his legs. After a lengthy recuperation, he became an F.

B. I. agent with the State Department in Europe during World War II. He later was assigned to Sandia Base in Albuquerque, NM where he lived for 36 years. After retiring from government services, he became a school administrator with Albuquerque Skill Center until his retirement in 1979 at which time he moved to Selma, Oregon.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed photography, fishing and silhouette pistol competition at Josephine County Sportsman's Park of which he was a member. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Maxine Westcott, Selma; twin sons, Terrell Westcott, Selma and Gerald, Albuquerque; daughter, Sharon Clouser, Selma; sister, Carolyn Wilson of Louisville, Texas and two children. Private services were held with Hull Hull Funeral Directors of Grants Pass, in charge of arrangements. Burmese Communist Thakin Soe, 83, Dies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS RANGOON, Burma Thakin Soe, one of Burma's most prominent communist leaders, has died at the age of 83, reports said Friday. Soe, who died Thursday following a long, undisclosed illness, was the only surviving founding member of the Communist Party in Burma, formed in 1937.

He spent most of his life underground and for a time led the Red Flag, or Trotskyite, branch of the party. He was captured by government forces in 1970 but released in a 1974 amnesty by the military government of former strongman Ne Win. Following student demonstrations, the military government of Gen. Saw Maung allowed the formation of political parties and Soe became the patron of the Unity and Peace Party, which hopes to contest elections promised for next year. Bowerman and wife, Diane of Denver, CO, L.D. Bowerman and wife, Mary of Omaha, NB, Carol Crifford of Rio Rancho, Evelyn Baker and husband, Gordon of Albuquerque, C.A. Bowerman and wife, Ann of Albuquerque, Ginger Nuanes and husband, Henry of Albuquerque, Easter Hancy and husband, Homer of Los Lunas, J.C. Bowerman and wife, Carol of Rio Rancho. He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren.

Mr. Bowerman was born in Delta, CO on January 2, 1908. He was the son of John C. Bowerman, gold prospector and founder of Bowerman, Colorado. He worked many years in the Colorado coal mines and later worked in Madrid, NM.

When the need for coal diminished he worked in censtruction. Mr. Bowerman was involved in building many of the highways that are traveled in New Mexico. He was well known for his innovative methods in the use of explosives. He was one of the first to do When he retired from construction in 1970, he started his third career, commercial fishing.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Services will be held at Church of the Latter-Day Saints Sixth Ward, 12701 Indian School Road, NE (Indian School near Eastridge) on Monday, May 8 at 10:30 A.M. Interment will take place at the Delta City Cemetery on Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming NE.

-Mass of Christian Burial for Julia Candelaria will be celebrated Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW, Rev. Fr. Ben Begin, celebrant of the Mass. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Raymundo Gutierrez, Arthur Zamora, Fred Wolfel, Paul Candelaria, Steve Romero, Johnny Padilla, Tony Romero and Martin Gutierrez. Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Coors Blvd. SW, in charge of service arrangements. COOK-Kenneth Cook, age 66, died at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque following a long illness. He was a resident of Albuquerque and was a WWII Veteran.

He is survived by a host of friends. Graveside services were held Friday at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Tom. V. Collings officiating.

All arrangements made by the Crestview Funeral Home, 7601 Wyoming N.E. DOMINGUEZ -Benjamin Felix Dominguez, age 66, and a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday in a local hospital. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jean; one daughter, Bea Meiers of Albuquerque; two grandsons, James and Steven Meiers of Albuquerque; three sisters, Ann Russell of Compton, CA, Bessie Garcia of Flagstaff, AZ and Mary Trujillo of Deming, NM; one brother, Fred Dominguez of Albuquerque; and his motherin-law, Anne Warner of Albuquerque. Mr. Dominguez was active in volunteer work at Queen of Heaven School and belonged to the National Association of Retired Railroad Employees.

Following cremation a Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. in Queen of Heaven Church with the Rev. Fr. Sabine Griego, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Queen of Heaven Educational Fund.

BLACK-Lane Weston Black, a resident of Albuquerque since 1959, went to be with Our Lord Wednesday, May 3, 1989. Lane was born April 16, 1918 in Pecos, Texas to Dr. Mrs. W.D. Black.

He married Catherine Downing of Santa Rosa, New Mexico on June 13, 1939 in Santa Rosa. Their 50th wedding anniversary would have been celebrated June 13, 1989. Lane was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Merchant Marines. He graduated from Arizona State University, Magna Cum Laude, in 1955. He attended Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, Texas.

He retired in 1983 as institutional foods sales manager at Zanios Foods. Lane was an Elder in the Christian Center of Albuquerque. He ministered in worship services by preaching and scripture reading. He loved the Lord Jesus and the Word, ministering to all who knew him. Fishing and hunting buck deer were his passions.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine D. Black of the home; daughter, Cathie Ann Eskew and husband Joe of Littleton, CO; son, Philip Lane Black and wife, Susan, of Casper, WY; grandchildren, Lane, Elizabeth and John Eskew, and Joshua, Jacob, Sara, and Philip Black; great -grandson, Gavin Eskew; sisters, Mary Eleanor Estes of Aztec, NM, Elizabeth Bingham and husband, Bill of Pecos, TX, and Carolyn Fielder and husband, John of Abilene, TX; and brother, W.
