Abstract
Chapter One introduces “the social determinants of health” and explains how this framework can inform research on cities and urban hospitals. The chapter explores the intertwined history of urban development and city hospitals, from their humble beginnings as philanthropic entities offering charity work, to their place as neighborhood anchor institutions, to their present, more embedded yet networked position in the healthcare industry. The chapter then provides a brief history of the book’s three hospitals, and—using U.S. Census and survey data—a broad picture of the ‘circles of disparity’ around these three hospital sites. The chapter settles on the question of community benefit: how should hospitals address health disparities and lingering poverty outside their walls? What is required and expected of them?
